I don't know where to apply! Where should I start looking?
University rankings are a reasonably good way to get an idea of potential universities (there are several ranking systems available online). You can narrow your search by considering the majors/research areas you're interested in. Knowing the faculty and their qualifications is a bonus.
Also gather information regarding the potential financial aid offered – scholarships, grants, and fellowships; some universities will have specific financial aid for international students. Find out that the student life is like - extracurricular activities, student groups, fraternities etc. Going from a tropical country pay attention to the location and weather you will encounter, you don't want to be surprised!
When should I begin the application process?
Usually universities will start accepting applications 6-9 months before the admission semester. For example, if you are applying to a US university for admission in the Fall (Autumn) of next year (September 2010), the admission deadline would be around the mid December this year (2009). In the case of rolling application, universities will accept student applications any time and consider you for the upcoming semester.
A strong application needs a lot of planning and preparation. Decide on the universities you want to apply, and begin this process at least 3 months before the admission deadline. Also be aware of test dates. Make sure you have ample time to prepare and take the standardized tests. Also ensure that your test scores get to the universities on time.
What does a "strong" application include?
A strong application includes a good "Statement of Purpose", excellent recommendation letters, solid examination grades/GPAs and above average test scores. If you are applying for graduate school, previous awards and published works are also important.
The "Statement of purpose" is where you make your case for admittance. It describes your positive characteristics and motivations that will show you as an asset to the school. Recommendation letters allow your teachers/employers to describe your capabilities and work ethic. Test scores and grades is an indication of your academic prowess. You should also include your extra-curricular achievements, social/ volunteer service and relevant work experience.
How much does the application process cost?
Applying to overseas universities does involve a fair expense. Sending in an application involves an application fee, (between US$ 50 to US$ 200 for US universities). Some universities waive this if you show financial constraints. Remember to ask the universities you are applying to if they follow this policy.
The standardized tests involve varying costs according to the exams you take (GRE, TOEFL costs around US$ 150/test). An additional fee is incurred if you want your test scores reported to more than a stipulated number of universities. Given that an undergrad applicant typically applies to 6 to 15 schools (Grad applicants only around 4 to 10), the application plus test related fees alone may range from US$ 650 to over US$ 2000 for US universities, with comparable expenses to other foreign universities.
